Leadership reports that the women were trying to cross a tributary of River Niger in the area as flood took over their village but drowned in the process.

Confirming the incident, Ibrahim Audu Hussaini, the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) public relations officer, noted that this year’s flooding in the state was taking the dimension of 2012 that submerged many villages.

“So far, 16 local governments have been affected out of the 25 local governments of the state which include Mokwa, Lavun, Borgu, Agwara, Lapai, Katcha, Agaie, Bida, Edati, Gbako and some parts of Bosso, Chanchaga, Shiroro, Munyan and Paikoro local governments respectively,” he said.

Hussain revealed that 460 communities were already affected by the flood and added that NSEMA was working with local government emergency committees to ascertain the exact number of people who were affected.

Hussain said that Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello, the governor of Niger state, had directed the agency to conduct an immediate assessment of the damage caused by the floods for immediate government intervention.

NSEMA’s official added that the agency was making a comprehensive report for the federal government so that it can intervene to ameliorate the suffering of the people.
